Artemisia Vulgaris

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a cherished herb for many homeowners. It has a rich history and is renowned for its versatility. This herb graced many gardens and apothecaries for centuries and was often used in herbal medicine. It was said that Roman soldiers placed Mugwort in their shoes, which they believed was effective for warding off fatigue.

This flowering plant is endemic to Asia, Northern Europe, and some parts of North America. It is usually an ingredient in beer concoctions. Research shows that people use this herb as a folk cure for many diseases, such as digestive problems, anxiety, and irregular menstrual periods.

The Mugwort is a perennial herb with an array of traits, from its feathery, silver-green leaves to its earthy, aromatic scent. Ancient cultures revered this herb for its medicinal and ceremonial significance. Today, it is used in culinary exploration and holistic wellness practices.

Mugwort Plant Maintenance

Also known as St. John's Plant, caring for this herb is easy, making it a good addition to any garden. Thriving in well-drained soil and partial sunlight, this resilient herb requires minimal upkeep. You only need to provide adequate water and occasional pruning to encourage bushy growth.

Mugwort plants thrive in sunny spots with well-draining soil but can adapt to various conditions once established. Surprisingly, infertile soils and dry climates may enhance their aromatic properties and longevity, although the plant might not reach its full height when planted in these areas.

  • Light: Mugwort flourishes best in full sunlight but can tolerate partial shade.

  • Soil: This plant is adaptable to many soil types, including those with high alkalinity or nitrogen. While it prefers slightly moist, well-drained soils, it can also survive in dry, less fertile ground, producing more aromatic, durable plants.

  • Water: Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Young plants need regular watering to maintain moist soil, but established Mugwort is quite drought-tolerant.

  • Temperature and Humidity: This hardy plant can endure various temperatures. However, the foliage may droop in regions with high summer heat and humidity, and the tall stems can become prone to flopping.

Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages denser growth. You can also mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, while occasional fertilization supports overall plant health.

Why Grow Mugwort Plant in Your Garden

Though often mistaken for a common weed, Mugwort offers many benefits that make it a valuable addition to any garden. This resilient herb can be grown purposefully for its impressive medicinal uses and health-boosting properties.

The Mugwort plant is renowned for relieving stress, boosting energy, and improving sleep quality. Its components, such as camphor, pinene, and cineole, have potent antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal effects.

In addition, research shows that Mugwort may support liver health, ease digestion, relieve headaches and muscle aches, and normalize menstrual cycles. It's also known to repel insects and promote blood circulation. Note that more studies are needed to verify these uses and determine proper dosages and administration. With these benefits, Mugwort can enhance both your garden and your well-being.

How to Propagate Mugwort in Your Garden

When you purchase a Mugwort plant for sale from a gardening center, you can be sure that it is easy to care for since it is quite hardy. Propagating Mugwort is a straightforward process. Here are the primary methods to propagate this herb:

1. Seed Propagation

  • Sowing: Start seeds indoors in early spring or directly sow them in the garden after the last frost.

  • Soil: Use well-draining soil and lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil or compost.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged until germination occurs, typically within 2-3 weeks.

  • Transplanting: Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them to their permanent location, ensuring they receive plenty of sunlight.

2. Division

  • Timing: Early spring or late fall is ideal for dividing established Mugwort plants.

  • Procedure: Carefully dig up the plant and gently separate the roots into smaller sections, each with several shoots and a healthy root system.

  • Replanting: Replant the divisions immediately into well-prepared soil, ensuring adequate spacing for better growth.

3. Cuttings

  • Selecting Cuttings: Take 4-6 inch cuttings from healthy, non-flowering stems in late spring or early summer.

  • Preparation: Remove the lower leaves, leaving a few at the top, and dip the cut end in the rooting hormone to enhance root development.

  • Planting: Place the cuttings in a pot filled with a well-draining potting mix, and keep the soil consistently moist.

  • Rooting: Cover the pot with a plastic bag or place it in a propagator to maintain high humidity. Roots should develop in 4-6 weeks, after which the cuttings can be transplanted outdoors.

By following these propagation methods, you can successfully expand your Mugwort collection and ensure a steady supply of this beneficial herb in your garden.

Harvesting Mugwort Herbs

You can harvest this herb at various times in a year. Depending on how you plan to use it, you can harvest it before the first frost of the fall season. You can also plan your harvests in other months.

You can harvest Mugwort when the plant reaches a height of about 12-24 inches before it flowers. The ideal time is in late spring or early summer. Look for vibrant, healthy leaves and stems. Cut the top third of the plant, ensuring it has ample growth for regrowth.

Pretty Good
Color: Red Nylon Yellow Hotdog
The toy is good for a heavy chewer, but is very slippery. You may want to rough it up a bit before giving it to your dog so they can hold onto it.

WARNING - EXTREMELY SHARP AREAS
Color: Yellow Nylon Corn on the Cob, Color: Yellow Nylon Corn on the Cob
UPDATE: The 2nd one I ordered was exactly the same with the sharp parts in the same areas as the first one. I cannot stress enough that a few points are sharp enough to cut or badly scratch. So if you’re planning on putting some food on it so your pup can lick, this is not the product you want! This could still scratch or cut the gums if used as a chew toy too though. I was thinking about sanding the sharp points but then I have no idea if that exposes any chemicals somehow? Really wanted this to work out! I took this corn on the cob toy out of the plastic to wash it and before I even got to the sink I realized there were several areas that are super sharp. A few sharp enough that could cut or badly scratch! It was sealed in a plastic bag and shows no signs of being used so this defect must happen at the manufactures level. I added a video showing how easily it snags a cotton ball, cotton pad and even a beanie. Please thoroughly check your item before giving it to your pup! I was so excited to put some smashed banana on this thing and give it to my guy and thank god I checked it first! I’m going to return it and see if a 2nd one is any better and I’ll update if it is or isn’t. Also, the super sharp spots were very hard to photograph which is why I added the video.
