Eastern Red Columbine: Aguilegia canadensis

Aguilegia canadensis is a beautiful plant native to North America, east of the Rocky Mountains. The genus name Aguilegia comes from the latin word Aquila meaning eagle and refers to the spurred flower petals that resemble an eagle's talons.

Plants grow 2-3' tall and 1-5' wide and will grow in full sun to shade and in a wide range of soil conditions. Red and yellow bell-like, 1-2' flowers are displayed atop delicate blue-green foliage from April to May. Ideal conditions for columbine are rich, moist soil with good drainage and light shade. Flowers attract birds, butterflies and hummingbirds.

Under optimum growing conditions, the eastern red columbine will self seed and naturalized. Seeds require 3-4 weeks of chilling at 40 F or below to germinate. When temperatures drop to meet the chilling requirement in the fall, direct sow seeds into the garden. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and lightly press into the soil. Do not cover. Seeds may also be chilled in the refrigerator and sown indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date. Plants flower the second year after germination.

USDA Zones 3-8.

Heirloom seeds are collected, cleaned and packaged by hand at Mount Vernon.

Worked for only 4 months. Now produces metal shards. Dangerous
Pros: Can be used with one hand. I bought this to have after surgery that left me without use of one arm for a few months. The light blinks when you need to charge it. Only needs a 2-3 min charge for enough juice to open a can. Cons: IT QUIT CUTTING CORRECTLY AFTER 4 MONTHS. I now have to use both hands to hold it in place to get it to latch on to the can. It also requires a few rotations around the top to cut through the seal, resulting in METAL SHARDS! The metal shards are super sharp and almost invisible. I stabbed myself with one enough to draw blood. This is dangerous as the metal could fall into the food when pouring from the can.

Can opener
It doesn't shut off by itself when done and doesn't shut off when I push the button, so after a while it will shut off but when it wants too after you take it off the can ,like 30 seconds. But I do like the way it cuts, a clean cut and lid removal nice.

Very dangerous metal shavings!!!
Negative stars if I could. This is a very dangerous product. It worked well for a while. But then it quit effectively removing the lid instead I got little tiny shavings of metal around the edge. These shavings of metal go into the food and very dangerous. So this was a waste of money and incredibly dangerous. I am throwing it in the trash today.
